Abstract:
In 13th-14th century Catalonia, public sermons could not be delivered without permission from the king and assistance from the local authorities. The general statute of 1243 allowed Dominican and Franciscan friars to address Jews and Muslims forcibly gathered for public sermons. This regulation was included in 1311 in the "Constitution of Catalonia". Jews were to be gathered in the synagogue to hear Catholic preachers, many of whom were converted Jews. Pp. 132-143 contain an appendix of ten Latin documents dated 1308-1390.
