Abstract:
Examines the "Acta Sancti Officii" in relation to the condemnation of Portuguese Conversos in Ancona in 1556 for apostasy. These records set down the principles on the basis of which the Conversos were persecuted. The Jewish character of the lives of the Conversos was officially recognized in 1547 by Pope Paul III, but Pope Paul IV (1555-59) began a zealous persecution of this group. The ca. 25 Conversos who refused reconciliation were burned at the stake in spring-summer 1556; the 14 who reconciled were condemned to imprisonment.
