Abstract:
Describes the tensions and conflicts which preceded the institution of the ghetto in Lugo (Romagna province, Italy). Lugo became part of the Papal States in 1598. Jews were allowed to live there and to establish a Jewish bank. Economic competition and claims that the Jews did not pay enough for municipal expenses resulted in a campaign, between 1613-35, to segregate the Jews, and even to expel them (e.g. 1624, 1629). Finally, a ghetto was instituted in 1635 for the ca. 600 Jews of Lugo, which existed until 1859.
