Abstract:
Discusses Levi's writings on the Holocaust, noting that the Holocaust awakened his Jewish consciousness. Asserts that his writings aim at arousing thought rather than emotion. Examines his state of mind after the war. Levi suffered from a feeling of guilt for having survived - in his view only the worst, the selfish, the bullies, and the schemers, survived - even though his survival was not due to any act of his own, but to luck and to the courageous aid of an Italian laborer. He was also depressed by the lack of interest in survivors' testimonies during the first ten postwar years.
