Abstract:
The Second Book of the Maccabees (2 M) is a deuterocanonical text written in Greek around the 2nd century BD, which is more often compared with Hellenistic than Biblical sources. However, some studies suggest a certain familiarity with some Old Testament books, rather unusual until quite recently. This article proposes a narratological analysis that goes in this direction and shows that the quinary structure refers more particularly to a deuteronomistic scheme. The position of the 7th chapter, in which the martyrdom of a mother and her seven sons is related, constitutes the major reversal of the narrative. Following a presentation of the delimitations of the text, of the central place occupied by the 7th chapter and the structure of 2 M, the schematic and theological links between 2 M and Deuteronomy are then highlighted.
