Abstract:
Describes the situation of Bulgarian Jews before and during World War II. Discusses Bulgarian fascist and right-wing organizations of the 1920s-30s, which professed an antisemitic ideology. Dwells on wartime anti-Jewish policies in Bulgaria, including anti-Jewish legislation and three attempts by Germans and Bulgarian authorities to deport Bulgarian Jews - in March 1943 from several towns, in April-May 1943 from Sofia, and in August 1943. These attempts were thwarted by the Bulgarian people, the Church, and the King himself.
