Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture. Wherever possible, the unfolding of history is illustrated by contemporary Jewish writings to show how Jews felt and reacted to the complex and difficult situations in which they found themselves." --

Abstract: In Mark 10:1–12, Jesus and the Pharisees discuss whether divorce is permissible. The Pharisees’ question and Jesus’s answer seem artificial against the background of ancient discourses on divorce. Particularly Jesus’s answer in Mark 10:9, which forbids divorce without exception, still gives rise to discussion today. It appears uncompromising and unyielding compared to other NT texts dealing with divorce (Matt 19:1–12; 1 Cor 7:10–16). I show that the prohibition of divorce in Mark 10:9 is the result of a conflict of authority between Jesus and the Pharisees that develops in the Streitgespräche in Mark’s Gospel up to Mark 10:1–12.

Abstract: The author of Hebrews accuses Esau of sexual immorality in Heb 12:16. This essay argues Esau’s sexual immorality is his marriage to foreign women, which sowed seeds of discord in the family and led ultimately to his unredeemable exclusion from the community. Esau’s exogamous marriage, as such, is not the concern in Hebrews, but rather how his mixed marriage introduced bitterness into the family and led ultimately to him abandoning the group. Like the wilderness generation in Num 13–14, Esau lost his inheritance by failing to persevere with the community. Tested against recent studies of conversion and deconversion, we see how Esau becomes a paradigmatic community-abandoning apostate and a warning against similar abandonment.

Abstract: The doctrinal continuum between ancestral merits and rewards and punishments is well established in Second Temple Judaism and is discernible in John 8–9. Following Philo of Alexandria’s questioning of these doctrinal correlates, the Johannine chapters are subjected to a theological-rhetorical analysis focused on the transitional passage (9:1–5). The passage is here seen not as an introduction to a new theme but as corollary to the preceding chapter(s), having a duo-directional significance, linking a two-part refutation of invariably related doctrines: ancestral merits and rewards and punishments. The rejection or refutation of the latter affirms the rejection or refutation of the former, and vice versa. The Johannine chapters in question have a thematic and dialectical connection; they constitute a substantial part of the broader, interrelated polemic of the Fourth Gospel.

Abstract: In the present article, I argue that a passage from the Damascus Document (CD 4:12–16 + 5:15–19) and an opaque saying attributed to Jesus (Luke 11:20) mutually illuminate each other. The starting point of both is the conception that a conflict between God and the evil power(s) took place before the Exodus. An analogy is drawn between this period and the present liminal period considered as the beginning of the eschatological period prior to the eschaton. The expectations for healing and resurrection in the eschaton in 4Q521 2 ii 8, 11–12 shed light on Matt 11:3 // Luke 7:19. When viewed through the lens of the conception that the eschatological period has already commenced, these expectations were transformed to Jesus’s activity in the present.

Abstract: This article presents several Genizah fragments containing passages of Saadya Gaon's translation of the Pentateuch in the handwriting of a copyist identified as Yedutun Ha-Levi ben Levi He-Ḥaver, who was active in the first half of the thirteenth century. These passages are transcribed in full in the article, together with a critical apparatus which compares them with early important manuscripts of Saadya Gaon's translation of the Pentateuch and the popular critical Derenbourg edition. The textual and grammatical analysis following these passages shows that their language should be regarded as post-Classical, and that both text and language broadly correspond with the early version of this translation, represented in MS St. Petersburg, RNL, MS Yevr. II C 1—the earliest inclusive manuscript of Saadya Gaon's translation of the Pentateuch copied by Samuel ben Jacob at the beginning of the eleventh century.

Abstract: This article argues that the different aspects at play in Rom 4 come together to depict Abraham as a paradigm, mirrored in both the Isaac story and in Ps 31 LXX. Abraham is not only an example of faith but also of how God justifies sinners. Abraham was ungodly, a trait that Paul develops in line with Rom 1,18–3,20 on universal sinfulness. The birth story of Isaac, his physical σπέρμα, illustrates how God makes the impossible possible and how the ungodly are reckoned righteous. Abraham trusts God, who calls into being what does not exist; in so doing, he mirrors the sinner in Ps 31, cited in Rom 4,7–8, who trusts and puts his hope in God.

Abstract: Scholars generally agree that Moses and Elijah appear at the Transfiguration because they are connected to each other in some way, and that this connection informs the significance of the story as a whole. However, there is no consensus regarding how Moses and Elijah are related, and consequently there is significant disagreement about how their presence contributes to the Transfiguration. The present study, which focuses on Mark's account (Mark 9.2–8), argues that Moses and Elijah appear together because they received similar theophanies at Mount Sinai and, as a result, the Transfiguration should be read as a mountaintop theophany in which Jesus constitutes the personal presence of Israel's God.

Abstract: In Christian tradition, Paul is the apostle to the nations. However, his portrayal in the Book of Acts is more nuanced. For a longer period, Paul's ministry is limited to Jews. Only from Acts 13 onwards does Paul slowly emerge as ministering to non-Jews. Yet even then, Paul remains foremost an emissary to diaspora Judaism. In its apology for Paul and his disputed way of including non-Jews into the people of God, Acts emphasises that Paul did so without diminishing the priority of Israel, as a staunch proponent of Jewish monotheism and in a way that took full account of the precarious situation of diaspora Judaism.

Abstract: Interpreters unanimously read ἐνευλογηθήσονται in Gen 12:3b LXX as a passive. Good evidence, however, exists to challenge and problematize this conclusion. Recent linguistic studies on the ancient Greek middle voice reveal that aorist and future -θη- forms express a semantically middle domain. When we reexamine the word ἐνευλογέομαι within this light, a better option emerges for seeing its -θη- forms as manifestations of speech actions within this middle domain. In their own unique ways, the LXX as well as Philo, Paul, and Acts further corroborate this alternative. As a result, we may read ἐνευλογηθήσονται in Gen 12:3b LXX as a speech action middle: “to pronounce blessings.” The proposed reading promotes a better understanding of Abraham within Genesis LXX. Rather than a means to an end, Abraham remains at the center of God’s blessing as the earth’s families cry out: “God make me like Abraham!”

Abstract: According to the traditional perspective, the early Christians refused to continue with the temple sacrifice. Christ on the cross had already atoned for all sins. Recently, other scholars, especially those belonging to the Radical New Perspective on Paul (or “Paul within Judaism” research), have argued instead that Paul carried on with temple worship, considered it efficacious, and expected Christ-following Jews to continue with the sacrifice. In this research we will investigate the positions of the different perspectives on Paul’s attitude toward Jewish sacrifices and evaluate the arguments at stake. Our research leads us to the conclusion that Paul did not consider the temple sacrifices a problem, but neither did he give them any salvific relevance for the recipients of his letters.

Abstract: The term ‘intertextuality’ has been in use in biblical studies for over three decades. However, the study of the relationship of biblical elements (e.g. theme and pattern) in the ot and how it functions as a compositional framework in the nt seems to have gained less attention. This paper, thus, aims to investigate whether the temple cleansing-rebuilding tradition in the ot underlies John’s Gospel as a compositional framework by: (1) introducing the term ‘hyper-intertextuality’; (2) discussing the distinctive pericope of Jesus’ temple cleansing in John’s Gospel; and (3) formulating a comparative method adapted from Halliday’s sociolinguistic theory of context of situation as a heuristic tool.

Abstract: The Markan Passion narrative alludes to Ps 22 (LXX Ps 21) in reverse, culminating with Jesus’ cry: ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ (Mark 15.34; cf. Ps 22.1). I argue that this ‘extended inverted allusion’ was an admired literary technique. Through select examples of this technique in the writings of the Hebrew Bible and Greco-Roman literature, I demonstrate its various functions—it can be employed to reverse meaning, to dissociate causation or to create new narrative trajectories. Reading Mark 15 in light of the literary functions of inverted allusion reveals new interpretive possibilities. In the Septuagint, Psalm 21 suggests that the psalmist's suffering was merited because of transgressions, but the inverted allusions to this Psalm in Mark 15 reinforce that Jesus’ suffering is unmerited (cf. Mark 15.10, 14) by decoupling the suffering from the transgressions. Additionally, in LXX Ps 21, the psalmist moves from forsakenness on account of transgressions toward divine deliverance. By alluding to this Psalm in reverse, Jesus travels the psalmist's journey in reverse. Rather than move from forsakenness toward divine deliverance, Mark's Jesus moves toward forsakenness, precisely to bring about divine deliverance.

Abstract: To affirm that Paul was a Jew did not emerge with the Paul within Judaism perspective, but only in recent decades have scholars begun not to evaluate this negatively over against Christianity. When the label »Paul within Judaism« appeared on the scene of scholarly research, it assembled under its umbrella a number of scholars who had argued over a significant period of time and from diverse angles that not only Paul himself but also his message should be seen as fully part of the range of Jewish traditions of the time. This has implications for all aspects of Pauline theologizing, including the key aspects of the assessment of time as messianic time, the role of scripture for ethnē in Christ, and God's faithfulness to his people Israel.

Abstract: In Job 29:9, the Septuagint and its ancient revisions diverge slightly from the Masoretic Text: instead of putting their hands over their mouths when Job appears on the city square, the notables use their fingers. This translation is all the more astonishing since elsewhere in the Septuagint, the Hebrew terms for such a gesture are rendered literally in Greek. The purpose of this short note is to show that the translator of the book of Job deliberately replaces one gesture with another because the meaning of the gesture mentioned in the Hebrew text is not entirely obvious in a Hellenistic context.

Abstract: Recently, more attention has been paid to the theology of the different LXX books. In order to examine whether the LXX books attest a different theology than their Hebrew counterparts, I have recently analysed the theology of Proverbs LXX by means of a new approach: the analysis of the additional attestations of ὁ θεός and ὁ κύριος without any counterpart in MT. Since this approach focuses on the explicit differences between MT and the LXX, the analysis of these additional attestations might elicit a specific theology. In this paper I will analyse the additional attestations of ὁ θεός and ὁ κύριος in Job LXX in order to examine whether or not the Greek version attests a different theology than the Hebrew version. Moreover, the results of this analysis will also be compared with the results on Proverbs LXX in order to provide an indicative answer to the question whether both books were translated by the same translator.

Abstract: Very little is known about the use of Scripture by Bardaisan, the Syriac-speaking Christian philosopher. The scholars have identified a few biblical references and terms, but they found that quotations are extremely rare. Even more so, it is difficult to state an opinion on Bardaisan’s exegetical method. Research has focused on Ephraim’s Memrā against Bardaisan and his passages concerning the reading of Jn 8:51. Now, it is possible to broaden the area of research on the testimony of Eusebius of Emesa – preserved in Armenian – about Bardaisanite exegesis of Gen 6:22 and Gen 7:1, as well as on the uses the Scriptures by Bardaisanite who intervenes in Adamantios’s Dialogue on Right Faith in God. The analysis of this new evidences shows that Bardaisan and his followers practised literal exegesis in the tradition of the Antiochian school.Il existe très peu d’informations sur l’utilisation des Écritures par Bardesane, le philosophe chrétien de langue syriaque. Les spécialistes ont identifié surtout des allusions et expressions bibliques, mais les citations restent extrêmement rares. À plus forte raison, il est difficile de se prononcer sur la méthode exégétique de Bardesane. Les recherches ont été concentrées sur le Memrā contre Bardesane d’Éphrem et ses passages concernant la lecture de Jn 8, 51. Cependant, il est possible d’élargir le champ de recherche sur le témoignage d’Eusèbe d’Émèse – conservé en arménien – au sujet de l’exégèse bardesanite de Gn 6, 22 et Gn 7, 1, ainsi que sur la manière d’utilisation des Écritures par le bardesanite qui in-tervient dans le Dialogue sur la juste foi en Dieu d’Adamantios. L’analyse de ce nouveau dossier montre que Bardesane et ses disciples ont pratiqué l’exégèse littérale, dans la tradition de l’école d’Antioche.

Abstract: The diasporic dimension of Jewish history involves the deterritorialization of the Jewish people. This study considers how the historian may think of the deterritorialization and reterritorialization of medieval Jews in terms of political subjection, spatial anchoring and submission to the halachic norm. The first part of the analysis is devoted to the apparent paradox which makes the Jews a deterritorialized people but whose individuals constitute communities rooted in the territory. Next, it focuses on Jewish law as a deterritorialized and universal tool of sovereignty and therefore as a center of Jewish life. Finally, the case of Narbonne allows us to consider the question of the re-territorialization of medieval Jews in the Diaspora.

Abstract: This essay offers a new reconstruction of the fascinating life and works of Solomon Yom Tov Bennett (1767–1838), a Jewish engraver and biblical scholar who emigrated from Belarus via Copenhagen and Berlin to London. While Bennett’s intellectual path might appear similar to several other notable Polish Jewish immigrants to Western Europe, he is quite distinctive for his remarkable coadunation of art and thought, for his unusual focus on biblical studies, for opening social and intellectual connections with some of the most famous and accomplished Christian intellectuals of London, and for his self-determination and drive to complete his life-long ambition of serving Western civilization by rewriting and correcting the entire standard edition of the English Old Testament, a task of translation, he fervently believed, that could only be fulfilled by a learned Jewish Hebraist like himself.

Abstract: What Paul has to say in Rom 8:19–22 about the subjection of ἡ κτίσις to futility, its bondage to corruption, and its groaning in pain is usually read as a statement about the general condition of creation, ruined by the sin of Adam as indicated in Rom 5:12, which, along with believers in Jesus, yearns for final restoration. The argument put forward here will be that the conceptual frame for the passage is furnished not by the story of the fall but by the more focused and characteristically Hellenistic-Jewish polemic against “Greek” idolatry developed in Rom 1:19–23. What troubles Paul as a pious Jew in the Mediterranean world is the subjection of the material of creation—wood, stone, gold, silver—to futile religious practices that result in the corruption of life. The whole of creation groans in solidarity with the abused “creature,” but in the “present time” there is also a groaning community that bears confident witness to the approaching end of the impious pagan order.

Abstract: This article examines how two central scholars based at the Hebrew University's Institute of Contemporary Jewry, Jonathan Frankel, and Ezra Mendelsohn, conceived, created, and codified the academic sub-field of modern Jewish politics. The article begins by discussing studies by earlier historians of the Jews like Salo W. Baron, Shmuel Ettinger, and Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi whose work often touched upon the intersection between Jews and politics. While Mendelsohn and Frankel's research was based upon key concepts developed by these scholars, their focus on the centrality of Jewish agency, the role of the Jewish intelligentsia, and the turn to "the (Jewish) people" helped create a new scholarly framework for imagining, analyzing, and researching modern Jewish politics. Despite their many achievements, they both overlooked several important topics in modern Jewish history including the role of religion, the activities of Jewish women, the experiences of Jews in North Africa and the Middle East, and the impact of Jewish politics on the Palestinians. By examining how these topics are dealt with in more recent works, the penultimate section in this article points to both the continuing influence of Mendelsohn and Frankel's scholarly paradigm as well as some of its inherent limits. In doing so, this analysis of modern Jewish politics makes for an intriguing case study regarding the organization, construction, and production of a particular field of knowledge while simultaneously raising critical questions regarding the very nature, limits, and future of Jewish studies.

Abstract: Targum Canticles is an allegorical interpretation of the biblical book of Canticles written in a special literary form of Aramaic, extant in over one hundred manuscripts dating from the twelfth to the twentieth centuries. The majority of scholars have believed that the work was written in Palestine in the seventh or eighth century, but the linguistic evidence clearly indicates that the author was not an Aramaic or Arabic speaker and did not live in Palestine. In this article I try to show how the language of the Targum suggests that it was written in southern Italy in the eleventh century. This conclusion, based on in-depth analysis of the language of the Targum and comparison with numerous sources, is supported by direct and indirect textual witnesses of the work and has implications for the study of other late Targums.

Abstract: According to the standard interpretation of Mark 7:19b—“Thus Jesus declared all foods clean”—Jesus nullifies the dietary commandments of the Torah. A close examination, which draws together some important recent research on this text, reveals that this is a misreading. Instead, Mark maintains a consistent portrait of Jesus as one who is faithful to Torah, even to the dietary laws. This will be shown through a close study of the syntax, literary context, sociocultural situation, Matthean parallel, and early church reaction. This article offers a close look at the standard interpretation, followed by an evaluation of two alternate readings.

Abstract: This paper presents the Targum text to Exod. 13:17–15:26 (the reading for the seventh day of Pesach) in the form that it is preserved in mahzorim (or festival prayerbooks). These liturgical manuscripts are witnesses to a textual tradition, hereafter named the “Liturgical Targum” (LTg), that is genealogically related to the broader Palestinian Targum tradition (PalTg), sharing a common source with other PalTg witnesses such as Targum Neofiti and the Fragment Targums. As reading traditions changed over time, and the role of Targum diminished within the synagogue, the text of LTg evolved: units ranging from individual words to entire verses of PalTg were removed or replaced with units of Targum Onqelos (TgOnq). Other PalTg texts show signs of this process of “Onqelosization,” including the text of Fragment Targum P (FragTgP), an enigmatic manuscript that contains the festival reading for the seventh day of Pesach (among other things). This paper will argue two main points: 1. the units of Targum that are shared between LTg and other members of the PalTg tradition show influence by TgOnq (i.e., “Onqelosization”); 2. FragTgP contains part of a text that is directly related to LTg and also contains Onqelosization.

Abstract: Four manuscripts from Qumran Cave 4 are identified as manuscripts that constitute a collection of excerpts from Deuteronomy: 4Q37, 4Q38, 4Q41, and 4Q44. This paper focuses on 4Q37 and its contribution to understanding the larger group of Deuteronomy-excerpted texts. Based on material reconstruction of the scroll, the paper confirms that it originally included excerpts from both Deuteronomy and Exodus. This conclusion establishes the existence of a repertoire of scriptural sections that were selected and cited in special-use—probably liturgical—texts. The broader implications for the reception history of the Pentateuch in Second Temple times is that the Pentateuch was not conceptualized solely as a legal code or intellectual text but also as a text that was used in liturgy.

Abstract: Karaim is a severely endangered language belonging to the Turkic language family and its only surviving dialect is Northwest Karaim with speakers in Lithuania and Poland. In the past few years numerous Karaim translations of the Bible have been discovered. Some of these are among the oldest texts written in this language. The authors present some of the oldest Karaim texts known today as well as recently discovered Karaim translations of the entire Tanakh. It is shown how these recent research results have broadened our knowledge regarding the Karaim written heritage. Furthermore, some preliminary conclusions are drawn on the relationships among the manuscripts and the biographies of the copyists and translators involved in their creation. Textual similarities between sources created separately in communities located far from one another in the regions of Crimea, Lithuania, Volhynia, and Galicia suggest that a common Karaim tradition of Bible translation must once have existed. Moreover, the textual complexity and the use of sophisticated translation techniques in the oldest known texts support the claim that they were based on older texts or on a well-established oral tradition of translation.

Abstract: Various Targums to the Pentateuch include an expansion to the biblical story of Cain and Abel, where the two brothers engage in a debate concerning divine justice and providence. The contents and form of the targumic debate vary widely, and its textual problems and possible theological and historical contexts have been discussed extensively. In this paper, I reconsider the relationships between the different versions of the debate in light of previously unnoticed textual evidence, primarily from textual witnesses of Targum Onqelos. I show that the Palestinian Targum tradition conflates, in different ways, two alternative versions of the debate, whereas some witnesses of Onqelos preserve only one of these versions in a slightly different form. I conclude that these witnesses preserve a source which was also used by the PalTg tradition and are not derived from the PalTg sources at our disposal.

Abstract: Histories like Heinrich Graetz’s Geschichte der Juden (1854–1876) may have once been prominent and popular, but more recently this genre has fallen out of favor as scholars generally no longer try to write monumental histories of the Jews. This article traces the turn away from monumental histories and how it represents fundamental changes in how scholars understand Jewish history: Graetz and his contemporaries constructed Jewish history as a unified field, but today some question the notion of “a” Jewish history, instead looking to a multiplicity of histories and narratives. Nevertheless, a cohort of leading scholars and popular writers continue to produce synthetic histories of the Jews, and many still produce linear narratives of Jewish history for introductory Jewish history courses. Consequently, this article brings together historiography and pedagogy to comprehend the persistence and meaning of master narrative frameworks as scholars and the public continue to envision Jewish history.

Abstract: The Jewish settlement in Cordoba predates the Islamic conquest of the Iberian peninsula. The integration of the Jewish community into the government is seen in the appearance of the figure of the Jewish courtier; and their integration into the cultural environment of al-Andalus can be initially seen in the progress made in the field of philology, poetry and legal texts, where the Andalusi intellectuals were pioneers. The havoc of the war and the economic collapse of the capital of the caliphate had repercussions for the Jewish community when the population was distributed by regions. The Jewish community of Cordoba would never recover its former prestige, although many important figures born in the city.

Abstract: Recent research on Jewish demonology has been significantly advanced by evidence from the Dead Sea Scrolls. In light of these advances, this article revisits the use of daimones and related terms in the Greek translations of Jewish scriptures commonly called the Septuagint (LXX). Against the tendency to conflate these LXX data into one intermediate stage in the development of the demonology of the New Testament, it calls for further attention to the particular dates and translational tendencies in specific LXX texts, as well as further attention to contemporaneous Aramaic and Hebrew sources. Accordingly, it situates the daimones of LXX Deuteronomy, the Greek Psalter, and LXX Isaiah alongside the emergent demonologies in the Aramaic Enoch literature, Jubilees, 4Q560, and 11Q11. Taken together, these sources attest new literary creativity surrounding transmundane powers among Jews in the Hellenistic period, shaped by distinctive concerns that cannot be reduced to a transitional, proto-Christian moment.

Abstract: The harmful legacy of Paul’s image of σάρξ (“flesh”) demands a rethinking of the term’s meaning in the allegory of Hagar in Gal 4:21–5:1. Σάρξ has been viewed as a spiritualized metaphor for sin, a connection that has perpetuated a racist sanction of slavery and a gendered, sexualized condemnation of materiality. In dialogue with Hortense Spillers’s paradigm-shifting notion of the flesh, I explore the powerful and painful images in this passage with attention to their embodied, social, and structural elements. In Spillers’s formulation, the flesh is a locus of the structural dispossession, dehumanization, and ungendering of African and African American people under the logics of American slavery, whereas the body is a locus of white people’s violent advantage. I propose that in Galatians Paul’s σάρξ indicates vulnerability and wounding, in contrast to the security indicated by the image of the πνɛῦμα (“spirit”). Galatians associates Hagar and Ishmael with the σάρξ, not to distance this enslaved family from the divine but rather to call attention to the social disenfranchisement of both mother and son.

Abstract: Biblical interpreters have long wrestled with the vicious anti-Jewish rhetoric of John’s gospel including, mostly famously, when Jesus calls Jews “children of the devil” (8:44). Post-Shoah, the anti-Jewish rhetoric of John’s gospel is even more horrifying. This article seeks to highlight the use of John 8:44 and other anti-Jewish rhetoric from John’s gospel in children’s literature from Nazi Germany. The children’s books under consideration show a progression from advocating for forced displacement of the Jews to advocating for murder. Seeing the intensification and advancement of this rhetoric, even in something seemingly harmless like children’s literature, is a warning to biblical scholars who may try to downplay or overlook the hateful language of John’s gospel.

Abstract: The article looks at the problem of the involvement of German Jews in World War I and their perception of those times, using as an example one of medium-sized industrial centres of Germany at the time. Stettin, then belonging to Pomerania province of the Kingdom of Prussia, while not a major centre of Jewish life nationwide, still had at that time a well organized Mosaic community and was an important local centre of the thinking and culture of German Jews. In her research the author reached for source materials which have escaped historians’ attention so far but which make it possible to look at the problem from several different angles. A review of a selection of articles printed during the war in the local periodical Jüdisches Gemeindeblatt für die Mitglieder der Synagogengemeinde Stettin sheds light on the position of leasing members of the community on problems related to the ongoing conflict, examined both from the theological as well as political or financial angle. Copies of Stettiner Werner Cohn’s letters from the front show how involvement in the hostilities and related developments impacted the daily reflections of a rank-and-file Jewish soldier. Meanwhile, the documents of the Stettin Jewish community produced post-World War I, dealing with questions of commemorating the dead and the growing threat of anti-Semitism, which are currently stored in Moscow archives, provide access to a reply to the question about the community members’ ex-post perception of their participation and involvement in the conflict and about some long-term consequences of such involvement for them. An analysis of these sources makes it possible to identify the specific ways in which these developments, unquestionably important for the German Jews, impacted this specific community.

Abstract: This article offers a comparison between the events of Alexandria, Egypt, in 38 CE, and the pogroms of nineteenth century Imperial Russia, which demonstrates the emergence of lexical and historical problems when labels are used to define events belonging to different chronological periods and cultural environments. The article argues that the word "pogrom," used to define Russian assaults against the Jews in the Pale of Settlement, has acquired semantic characteristics that cannot be applied to the events of Alexandria almost 2,000 years earlier.

Abstract: Markan interpreters have long observed that the words of the voice from heaven at Jesus's baptism in Mark 1:11, "You are my beloved son, in you I am well pleased," recall one or more passages from the LXX, most often Ps 2:7 and Isa 42:1. Yet few interpreters note that Mark 1:11 also bears remarkable similarity to another verse—Jer 38:20 LXX (31:20 MT)—in which God calls Israel his "beloved son." On closer inspection, there are reasons to believe that Mark alludes to this verse as well as to Ps 2:7 and Isa 42:1. In addition to the fact that Israel is the only entity known as God's "beloved son" in ancient Jewish literature outside the New Testament, Mark's prologue and Jer 38 are united by a common remembrance of Israel's exodus and the expectation of a new one. If this reading is correct, then Mark simultaneously identifies Jesus as God's royal son and the embodiment of God's original son, Israel, in one breath.

Abstract: This chapter explores the life of Jews in Indonesia before and after its independence. Emerging in the nineteenth century, the local Jewish community thrived in small and remote settlements under the rule of Dutch colonialism and reached its apex in 1941 with the influx of European refugees. Many of the Jews were detained during the Japanese occupation and following the country’s independence, the vast majority of them migrated to other countries. Abstract: This concluding chapter examines the underlying commonalities, demographic features and distinctive characteristics of the Jewish settlement in modern Asia as they appear in this volume and analyzes them along the ten lines of investigation presented in the Introduction. This chapter provides also estimates for the size of the various communities since 1850 and offers illuminating insights into the contribution of the Jewish communities to Asia on the one hand and the place of Asia in modern Jewish history on the other hand.

Abstract: In this article, I focus on two themes connected to the Jewish community of the southern Moroccan town of Oufran and its place within conceptions of Moroccan Jewishness and Jewish Moroccanness. The first theme is the story of Oufran's burned martyrs—ha-nisrafim in Hebrew—and the second, the topos of this community's antiquity. I analyze the intertextual creation, circulation, evolution, and use of the stories of Oufran by Jews, Muslims, and French-Christian colonial agents and discuss how these stories derive from and have sustained Judeo-Muslim imaginings and shared experiences. I also claim that Oufran's story and history are deeply affected by "translations" between different realms of knowledge.

Abstract: This chapter is concerned with the history and historiography of the traditional (native) communities of Jews in (Soviet) Central Asia. Most scholarly and popular literature, it argues, portrays these communities as distinct, secluded Jewish ethnic groups, disconnected from each other and from the wider Jewish world. However, a better understanding of their intertwined histories requires the placement of these Jewish groups in a wider cultural and geographical context.

Abstract: This article introduces an unknown autobiography written by Aryeh Leib Feinstein who was a communal official in Brisk (Brześć Litewski). In this detailed memoir, written in 1896 and preserved in manuscript form only, Feinstein describes his life from his childhood in a small village near Brisk up to his adulthood, when he became a wealthy merchant in Brisk and a well-known historian of the local community. This unique egodocument is a subjective interpretation of the profound transformations of Eastern European Jewish culture during the second half of the 19th century. It enables us a better understanding of the complex relationship between the personal and the public spheres during this era and illustrates the need of broadening the setting of the self-fashioning of Jewish individuals.
