Abstract:
Describes the persecution of Jews in the Netherlands, their internment in Westerbork, and the deportations to the East. Although most of the Jews were sent to Auschwitz, certain categories were at first exempt and later put on lists for the "better" camps of Bergen-Belsen and Theresienstadt. Chronicles the history of the Theresienstadt ghetto in general and of the internees from the Netherlands in particular, from the arrival of the first Netherlands transport in spring 1942 until liberation and repatriation. Compares the Netherlanders to the Czech and German prisoners and suggests that their separateness and unwillingness to adjust, which existed also in other ghettos and concentration camps, may account for their relatively high mortality rate.
