Abstract: Dismisses the myth of the centuries-long tolerance of the Belorussian people toward the Jews: in 16th-17th century Belorussia (in those days, part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania) antisemitism was just as widespread as in the rest of Europe. The Belorussian religious literature of the period maintained that the Jews were a God-accursed people and Judaism was a diabolical heresy. Belief in Jewish ritual murder and in Jewish witchcraft was prevalent. The authorities of many Belorussian towns tried to prevent Jewish economic activities, and state decrees restricted the rights of the Jews. There were anti-Jewish riots in areas of Belorussia. Nevertheless, antisemitism in Belorussia in the 16th-17th centuries was relatively milder than in the West at the same time.
