Kurzfassung:
Describes the conditions of scarcity and impoverishment in Switzerland because of the unpaid army service of the men and the closing of borders to most foreign trade. Pp. 142-154, "Die Wucherprozesse: Konfrontation mit Antisemitismus", chronicle the prosecution of alleged speculators who exploited the situation to enrich themselves. Of the accused in Basel (city and canton), the majority (and of those sentenced, nearly all) were Jews. Asserts that the trials were grossly unfair; they were show trials meant to give the populace a scapegoat for their misery. The judge and the state prosecutor openly admitted their antisemitism. Jewish community leaders, however, believed the allegations and disowned the accused, pleading that the whole community should not be judged by the misdeeds of a few. As a result of these developments, Basel Jews became isolated from Swiss society and turned increasingly to Zionism.
