Abstract:
Describes the ambivalent position of Christian scholars who combined exceptional Judaistic learning and "love for the Jews" with the mission to convert them. Franz Delitzsch, Gustav Dalman, and Hermann Strack earned the gratitude of Jews by using their scholarly authority to defend them against widespread attacks against the Talmud as an allegedly anti-Christian text and against the blood libels at the end of the 19th century. Delitzsch and Dalman, however, quoted passages from Jewish post-biblical literature to show its inferiority, thus providing fuel for antisemites. Strack's defense of Judaism was clear-cut and his love of Jews unconditional, even though, as founder of the Institutum Judaicum in Berlin in 1883, he was devoted to the education of missionaries to convert the Jews.
