Abstract:
The December 2008-January 2009 anti-terrorist operation "Cast Lead" of the Israeli Army in the Gaza Strip has triggered a wave of anti-Israel and antisemitic actions around the world, including in the states of the former USSR. In the latter, it proved impossible to organize mass anti-Israel demonstrations like the ones that took place in Europe. The Gaza conflict was of no interest to the leaders of most CIS countries. Only a minority of Russian and Ukrainian nationalists (e.g. Maksim Shevchenko and Oleh Tyahnybok) expressed anti-Israel attitudes and attempted to take part in anti-Israel activities; communists are more outspoken in their hatred toward Israel. The most aggressive anti-Israel and anti-Jewish reactions came from the Muslim majorities in Azerbaijan and in Central-Asian states, and from Muslim minorities in other CIS states, especially from the Autonomy of Daghestan in Russia. Muslim leaders and rank-and-file Muslims accuse and make verbal threats against Jews, rather than against Israelis and Zionists. Notes that, in post-Soviet territory, an anti-Israel sociopolitical bloc is forming, able to unite not only Muslim groups, but also the left-wing intelligentsia.
