Abstract:
The 77 young men were all familiar with the use of the word "Jew" (Jude, juif, feuj) in a pejorative sense, often toward their own (non-Jewish) pals; it was part of belonging to the group. Argues that although the boys mostly used the word routinely and without much reflection, they did associate it with antisemitic stereotypes such as miserliness, and its use fostered antisemitic ideology, hostility and aggression toward Jews.
