    Abstract: Fotografinnen wie Alice Hausdorff, Ellen Auerbach, Liselotte Grschebina, Lou Landauer, Marli Shamir oder Ricarda Schwerin und andere waren Teil der avantgardistischen Strömungen der Weimarer Republik und gestalteten diese maßgeblich mit. Unter der Bedrohung des Nazi-Regimes verließen sie Deutschland und emigrierten nach Palästina / Israel, wo es ihnen unter äußerst entbehrungsreichen Umständen gelang, ihre fotografische Tätigkeit fortzusetzen. Die Fotografien illustrieren vergessene und unbekannte weibliche Perspektiven auf die Weimarer Republik, Erfahrungen von Flucht und Exil in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus sowie den Nation-Building-Prozess in Palästina und im frühen Staat Israel. Sie zeigen aber auch einen Kunst- und Kulturtransfer der Avantgarde-Fotografie, die die Fotografinnen mit nach Palästina / Israel brachten und dort in die neuen Gegebenheiten übersetzten. Aus Gründen von Gender und Exil ist das bedeutende künstlerische Leben und Werk dieser Fotografinnen weitestgehend in Vergessenheit geraten. Anna Sophia Messner hat die teilweise verschollenen Nachlässe materialästhetisch und historisch aufgedeckt und dabei neue Forschungsfragen und -impulse aufgeworfen, insbesondere mit Blick auf die Relevanz bisher marginalisierter Stimmen.

    Abstract: Der israelisch-palästinensische Konflikt gehört zu den international meistbeachteten seit Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Die Nahostexpertin Muriel Asseburg blickt auf die Entwicklungen auf palästinensischer Seite infolge der im Umfeld der Staatsgründung Israels im Jahre 1948 erfolgten Flucht und Vertreibung vieler arabischer Bewohner. Bemühungen um einen souveränen Staat auf dem Territorium der 1967 von Israel besetzten palästinensischen Gebiete Westjordanland, Gazastreifen und Ost-Jerusalem blieben trotz langjähriger Verhandlungen erfolglos; ein realistisches Szenario für einen Friedensschluss ist aktuell nicht erkennbar. Asseburg skizziert die politischen Entwicklungen und historischen Einschnitte, etwa die erste und zweite Intifada oder das Oslo-Abkommen und seine Folgen, und beschreibt die Entwicklung der palästinensischen Nationalbewegung einschließlich der inneren Auseinandersetzungen und Spannungen. So ergibt sich ein differenzierter Blick auf die Lebensrealität der Palästinenserinnen und Palästinenser und auf die Geschichte des Nahostkonflikts aus deren Perspektive.

    Abstract: "This book analyzes Jewish society in Roman Palestine in the time of the Mishnah (70-250 CE) in a systematic way, carefully delineating the various economic groups living therein, from the destitute, to the poor, to the middling, to the rich, and to the superrich. It gleans the various socioeconomic strata from the terminology employed by contemporary literary sources via contextual, philological, and historical-critical analysis. It also takes a multidisciplinary approach to analyze and interpret relevant archeological and inscriptional evidence as well as numerous legal sources. The research presented herein shows that various expressions in the sources have latent meanings that indicate socioeconomic status. "Rich," for example, does not necessarily refer to the elite, and "poor" does not necessarily refer to the destitute. Jewish society consisted of groups on a continuum from extremely poor to extremely rich, and the various middling groups played a more important role in the economy than has hitherto been thought"

    Abstract: Napoleon's invasion of the Middle East marks the beginning of the modern era in the region. This book traces the developments that led to the making of a new and separate geographical-political entity in the Middle East known as Eretz Israel and the establishment of the State of Israel within its bounds. Thus, its time frame runs from Napoleon's invasion of Eretz Israel / Palestine in 1799 to the establishment of Israel in 1948-1949. Eretz Israel as the formal name of a separate entity in the modern era first appeared in the early translations into Hebrew of the Balfour Declaration, while in the original document the country was referred to as "Palestine." During the period of Ottoman rule the territory that would in time be called Eretz Israel / Palestine was not a separate political unit. Among Jews, use of "Eretz Israel" increased only after the beginning of Zionist aliyot. Had the Zionist movement not arisen, it is doubtful whether the development to which this study is devoted would have occurred. The motivating force behind that process is without doubt the Zionist element. That is why Jews are the major protagonists in this book

    Abstract: Die Erinnerung an den religiös-zionistischen Pädagogen Kurt Silberpfennig (1905–1942) stellt sich dar wie ein vor langer Zeit zerschlagenes Glas; die meisten Scherben sind zu Splittern zertreten, blind geworden und zu Sand zerrieben. Nur Weniges ist von ihm geblieben, eine Akte mit Studienunterlagen, ein Ausreiseantrag, ein polizeiliches Vernehmungsprotokoll, wenige Briefwechsel, zwei Zeitschriftenbeiträge, drei Fotos, sein Name in Adressbüchern. Die Recherchen führen zu einem Lehrer und Jugendfunktionär, der an der jüdischen Volksschule des Philanthropin in Frankfurt am Main unterrichtete, anschließend für den Jugendverband Bachad im Palästina-Amt in Berlin arbeitete und in dieser Funktion als Delegierter 1939 am 21. Zionistenkongress in Genf teilnahm. Ab 1940 leitete Silberpfennig das Hachschara-Lager Steckelsdorf in Brandenburg und wurde im Juli 1942 mit seiner Familie und den Steckelsdorfer Jugendlichen nach Auschwitz deportiert. Der Studie gelingt es, die noch vorhandenen Fragmente in ihren zeitgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang einzuordnen und schließlich eine weitgehend unbekannte Phase deutsch-jüdischer Bildungsgeschichte zu rekonstruieren.

Although the dominant view in the Jewish and non-Jewish worlds was that displaced Jews should settle in the Land of Israel, tens of thousands of Jews who immigrated to the country subsequently left, either returning to their homes in Europe and the Middle East, or heading to new destinations, mainly in North America. While the Zionist movement aspired to create a sense of Jewish rootedness and permanence in the soil of the Land of Israel, the study argues that many Jews saw the country not as a permanent homeland or a final destination, but as a site of displacement or a way-station to more desirable lands.     Abstract: Research on Jewish settlement of the Land of Israel in the modern era has long neglected the sea and its shores. This book explores the Yishuv's hold on the Mediterranean and other bodies of water during the British Mandate in Palestine and the Zionist "maritime revolution," a shift from a focus on land-based development to an embrace of the sea as a source of security, economic growth, clandestine immigration (haapala), and national pride. The transformation is tracked in four spheres - ports, seamanship, fishery, and education - and viewed within the context of the Jewish/Arab conflict, internal Yishuv politics, and the Second World War. Archives, memoirs, press, and secondary sources all help illuminate the Zionist Movement's road to maritime sovereignty. By the State of Israel's founding in 1948, the Yishuv had a flourishing nautical presence: a national shipping company, control over the country's three active ports, maritime athletics, fish farming, and a nautical training school

    Abstract: Seeking out the Land describes the study of the Holy Land in the Roman period and examines the complex connections between theology, social agenda and the intellectual pursuit. Holiness as a theological concept determines the intellectual agenda of the elite society of writers seeking to describe the land, as well as their preoccupation with its physical aspects and their actual knowledge about it. Ze'ev Safrai succeeds in examining all the ancient monotheistic literature, both Jewish and Christian, up to the fourth century CE, and in demonstrating how all the above-mentioned factors coalesce into a single entity. We learn that in both religions, with all their various subgroups, the same social and religious factors were at work, but with differing intensity

    Abstract: Dieses Studienbuch stellt die "Geschichte Israels" von den Anfängen bis zum Bar-Kochba-Aufstand 132-135 n. Chr. dar. Das für Exegese und Theologiestudium unverzichtbare Wissen vermittelt der Autor verständlich und vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen Forschung. Er zieht für seine Darstellung alle verfügbaren Quellen heran. Exemplarisch wird aufgezeigt, wie diese Quellen zu interpretieren sind und wo die Grenzen der Rekonstruktion von Geschichte liegen. Dazu führt er in den Stand der archäologischen und historischen Forschung ein und bezieht die Ergebnisse kritisch auf die biblische Darstellung. So entsteht ein Bild der Geschichte des antiken Israel im Kontext der südlichen Levante, das manches Mal vertraut, oft aber auch frisch und unerwartet daherkommt. Für die Neuauflage wurden zahlreiche Abschnitte überarbeitet und neueste Literatur ergänzt. Der Charakter als Studienbuch wurde noch einmal methodisch reflektiert und verstärkt.

    Abstract: Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts bezeichnete der Soziologe Werner Sombart die Juden als Motoren des Fortschritts. Ihr herausragender Anteil an der Modernisierung der Gesellschaft, der die Wirtschaft und den Handel ebenso betraf wie die geistigen und intellektuellen Leistungen in Forschung, Presse oder Kunst, war offenkundig und begünstigte antisemitische Stereotypen. Gegenüber den geistigen und intellektuellen Tätigkeitsfeldern waren Juden in traditionellen Berufsfeldern wie Handwerk, Gärtnerei oder Landwirtschaft nur marginal repräsentiert – am ehesten gingen die Begriffe »Jude« und »Landwirtschaft« noch in der Figur des Viehhändlers zusammen. Dennoch gab es jenseits des Landjudentums, das aufgrund von Emanzipation und Stadtflucht ständig an Bedeutung verlor, Juden, die sich für eine landwirtschaftliche Existenzweise entschieden. Was ihre Motive waren, wie sie die Bedrohung des Nationalsozialismus erlebten und welches ihre Schicksale waren, zeigt der vorliegende Band belegt an einem knappen Dutzend höchst unterschiedlicher Beispiele im Bereich des nördlichen Bodensees auf. Die meisten Porträtierten kamen aus großen Städten an den Bodensee. Ihrer müde oder überdrüssig, waren sie auf der Suche nach einer anderen Lebensweise oder sie wurden durch die politische Entwicklung der frühen 30er Jahre aus ihrer Lebensbahn geworfen und erwarteten sich von der Abgeschiedenheit dieser Landschaft den relativen Schutz grenznaher Regionen. In neun Kapiteln stellen die Autoren jüdische Landwirte und Hofbesitzer am Bodensee vor.

    Abstract: Each year, Israel's young men and women are drafted into compulsory military service and are required to engage directly in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This conflict is by its nature intensely complex and is played out under the full glare of international security. So, how does Israel's education system prepare its young people for this? How is Palestine, and the Palestinians against whom these young Israelis will potentially be required to use force, portrayed in the school system? Nurit Peled-Elhanan argues that the textbooks used in the school system are laced with a pro-Israel ideology, and that they play a part in priming Israeli children for military service. She analyzes the presentation of images, maps, layouts and use of language in History, Geography and Civic Studies textbooks, and reveals how the books might be seen to marginalize Palestinians, legitimize Israeli military action and reinforce Jewish-Israeli territorial identity.This book provides a fresh scholarly contribution to the Israeli-Palestinian debate, and will be relevant to the fields of Middle East Studies and Politics more widely.

    Abstract: Sind biblische Ereignisse wie der Auszug aus Ägypten und die Landnahme des Volkes Israel in Kanaan ins Reich der Sage zu verweisen? Dass eine zunehmende Anzahl von Gelehrten heute diese Meinung vertritt, hat eine wesentliche Ursache in Diskrepanzen zwischen den biblischen Berichten und dem archäologischen Befund, wie sie in den letzten Jahrzehnten zunehmend ans Tageslicht getreten sind. Es ist jedoch übereilt, die angesprochenen Widersprüche den biblischen Berichten anzulasten. Die These des vorliegenden Buches ist, dass eine wahrscheinliche Ursache in der fehlerhaften Datierung der archäologischen Horizonte zu suchen ist, in deren Konsequenz die Forscher die Indizien alttestamentlicher Ereignisse in den falschen Schichten suchen würden.

    Abstract: Die Bauten des judäischen Königs Herodes des Großen (ca. 60-4 v.Chr.) werden unter dem Aspekt ihres politischen Zweckes untersucht. Aus der Bevölkerungsvielfalt im Lande ergibt sich, daß Baupolitik, Bauwerke und Absichten vielfältig waren. Während Herodes rechtlich ein römischer Klientelkönig war, folgte seine Innenpolitik dem Vorbild hellenistischer Monarchen, wobei weder das eine noch das andere von Juden anerkannt wurde. Folgerichtig beschränkte Herodes die Anlage von Augusteia auf nicht-jüdische Gebiete. Die Anregungen für seine Bauwerke lassen sich auf Auslandsreisen zurückführen und sind besonders in der neuen Hafenstadt Caesarea deutlich, wo Herodes frei von existierenden Strukturen und jüdischer religiöser Empfindlichkeit planen konnte. Extravagantes und Einmaliges findet sich auch in seinen Palästen, wobei stets das jüdische Bilderverbot beachtet blieb. In der Hauptstadt Jerusalem wurden religiöse Vorgaben und kunstvolle Bauten miteinander verbunden, z.B. im neuen Jüdischen Tempel. Somit versuchte Herodes seine Position vor Rom und seinen Untertanen zu legitimieren, womit er nur bei Nicht-Juden erfolgreich war.
