Abstract:
Fritz Weiss describes the time he spent in British internment, more than three years, during World War II. Chapters 1-3 deal with the events prior to him being sent to the Isle of Man, such as his arrival in London and his stay in Devonshire. Chapters 4-5 describe the German torpedo attack and subsequent sinking of the "Arandora Star" and the dramatic rescue of some of the internee passengers. The ship was on a voyage from Liverpool to St. John's, Newfoundland, with internees and prisoners of war. In chapters 6-8 Fritz Weiss describes his recovery and respite in Scotland, his subsequent outdoor interment on English moors and his eventual transfer to the Isle of Man. His stay in the internment camp on the Isle of Man is described in detail in chapter 9. Weiss notes that German-Jewish refugees and German prisoners of war were sometimes interned together and that they often got along remarkably well. Chapters 10-11 further describe the internment camp and his eventual release.
