    Abstract: The memoir was written 1946 in Austria, shortly after her liberation. Minna recalls her deportation in February 1942. She was taken to Riga together with her parents and her husband. Her mother was killed upon their arrival. Her father and her husband were taken to Salaspils for forced labor, where the later perished. Minna, who was pregnant with her first child, was forced to undergo an abortion. She describes her experiences of Nazi sadism in the Ghetto of Riga, especially by the Ghetto commanders Krause and Roschmann. In 1943 Minna was taken for peat cutting labor to Olaine. In November 1943 Minna and her father were reunited at the concentration camp Kaiserwald near Riga. From there both were taken to Spilve - a labor camp at a German air base, which was under worse conditions than the first camp. They worked in the cold without appropriate shoes and in thin clothes. Due to the exhausting conditions Minna's father Wilhelm was getting weaker and eventually was deported to Auschwitz in April 1944. Minna was taken to Stutthof, which was overcrowded and in primitive conditions. They were taken to an exterior labor camp, where they had to build trenches for the German defense in the rain and cold. They suffered of constant hunger. In January 1945 the camp was dissolved and all sick and disabled were killed. They were marched under exhausting conditions in the snow and cold. For all missing women ten others were chosen randomly to be killed. After a week Minna was finally too exhausted to continue walking and stayed behind. The guard who was supposed to kill her fired the bullet over her head and left her for dead in the snow. She was rescued and brought to a house, where she was given food and a place to sleep. She was discovered by a German police officer, who was about to shoot her along with other Jewish fugitives. Minna was saved by her Viennese accent, which convinced him that she was a gentile woman.
    Abstract: She was taken to a mobile army hospital and treated for her frozen feet. In March 1945 Minna was liberated in Lauenburg, Prussia, where she was sent by German hospitals as an unidentified Jewish patient.

    Abstract: The diaries of Toni Ehrlich – 29 handwritten notebooks – document her life on an almost day to day basis, beginning on April 1, 1906 and ending with a single word (“Lo”, meaning “no” in Hebrew) on October 21, 1969. Her thoughts and observations concentrate mostly on matters and issues of art and culture, as well as – to a lesser degree – current events. Private matters, including life changing ones - like her husband’s death -, are mentioned on the side, if at all. The original diaries in old German handwriting are accompanied by detailed summaries in English and a list of names, provided by Irene Miller.

    Abstract: The memoirs were written in the 1970s in the United States. Description of family background. His father Dr. Ernst Ruzicka came from an assimilated Jewish family in Vienna, whereas his mother was born to an orthodox Jewish family in Galicia, Eastern Europe. The marriage only lasted a few years. Martin was raised by a Catholic governess, who contributed to his confusion in religious matters. He was enrolled in a local Gymnasium, and later on continued his studies at the Vienna University.The main part of the memoir concentrates on a detailed reflection and description of the “Halsman-trial” in 1928, where a young Jewish man from Latvia was charged with the murder of his father during an alpine tour in Tyrol. This trial contributed to an open outburst of anti-Semitism in Austria and even received international attention, comparable to the Dreyfus scandal in France a few decades earlier. The author reflects on the different stages of the trial and the increasing anti-Semitism during that process. He also describes the effect on his assimilated paternal family, who expressed their identification with the young Phillippe Halsmann as well as their worries about the injustice done. The father of the author published various articles in the “Neue Freie Presse” about the case and was involved in the trial regarding a crucial witness of the defence. He eventually wrote a book about the Halsman case, which was published in 1930.
    Abstract: On the day of the Anschluss in March of 1938, the author left Austria together with his brother and eventually emigrated to the United States. His father originally disapproved of their decision, assuming nobody would dare to lay a finger on the family of a World War One veteran. He later on was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Buchenwald concentration camp, where he perished in 1941.
    Abstract: The memoirs end with a reflection on the parallels between the lives of Halsman's and his own family during a trip to Austria in 1973. It includes a petition to the Austrian president Franz Jonas to reverse the verdict in the Halsman case in order to remove a stigma not only from Halsman, but also from Austria.

    Abstract: Adolf Unger was born on July 6, 1863 in Enying, Hungary. His parents were Nathan Unger who was born in Burgenland, Austria, and Julie Deutsch, nee Deutsch, born in Goerbe, Hungary. In 1874, the family moved to Vienna, and young Adolf had to learn German. He was dropping out of school at age 14, and started an apprenticeship as tailor. He soon became a salesperson for his uncle’s store “Ignaz Weisz”. After his uncle died, he took over his business. After a few years, he changed the name to “Alfred Unger, master tailor”. The store which was located at Rochusgasse in the third Viennese district, grew bigger and bigger, and its name was changed again, “Kleiderhaus Monopol”. His brother Ludwig became a tailor and worked for him until December 1938, when his trade certificate was taken away by the Nazis. Only a few days before World War 2 broke out, on August 16, 1939, Adolf Unger could flee to London, England, with his wife, where he died in 1941.

Description of the Vienna University and its leading intellectual figures. History of the Fischer family, going back to the 18th century in Bohemia. The author’s grandfather was one of the first Jewish students admitted to practice for the teaching profession in a public school, which were closed to Jews up to the time after the revolution of 1848. Albert Fischer became a renowned educator and director of the Israelitische Kinderbewahranstalt, which he transformed into a Kindergarten according to the ideas of Pestalozzi and Froebel. The author’s father was a law student, who was forced to leave the German national student association due to anti-Semitism. He became a teacher and stenographer at the Austrian parliament.

    Abstract: The memoir was written 1942 in Haifa, Palestine. Recollection of Toni Ehrlich (née Goldschmidt)'s childhood in Breslau at the end of the 19th century (1880-1895) in an assimilated upper-class Jewish family. Her father, Siegfried Goldschmidt, was the representative of Hoechst IG Farben, the chemical industry company in eastern Europe and founded the largest soap factory in eastern Germany. In 1872 he married Flora Rother. Both her parents were fond of traveling. Her older sister Grete, born 1873, was an excellent student and very close to her. Toni Ehrlich attended the Froebel Kindergarten from age 4 to 6. Recollections of summer vacations in the countryside. Memories of Christmas celebrations and fasting on Yom Kippur. Cultural life and family meetings. Her mother encouraged toughening (Abhaertung) through physical exercises and swimming lessons for her daughters at an early age. Recollections of her elementary school and her early awareness of being different as the only Jewish student among her class amtes. Memories of Imperial Germany and patriotic celebrations of the emperor's birthday at school. Piano and dance lessons. Dream of becoming a dancer, which was impossible in her social setting. In 1891 Toni Goldschmidt was enrolled in the Augusta girl's school in Breslau, where she received Jewish religious education for the first time. Summer vacations in Tyrol and Italy. Many decades later, she found her writings again in form of a little notebook, written with pencil and fading away. This memoir then is cleared from some mistakes and in her current handwriting. It starts with her 10th birthday, which was only a few days before the Anschluss.

He studied at the famous yeshiva of Esriel Hildesheimer in Eisenstadt, where he was ordained as a rabbi. Her mother Ida Goitein, nee Loewenfeld was born in 1848 in Posen. She passed the teacher's exams secretly - a profession very unusual for a woman in her time. Rahel was born as the fourth child of the Goitein family in 1880. Sudden death of her father in 1883. Rahel attended Hebrew school for eight years in addition to her regular schooling and experienced from an early age on the difference between the two worlds. Celebration of Jewish holidays.     Abstract: The memoirs were written in 1940. Vague childhood recollections of the author's father, who died unexpectedly in 1900 and left the family in a precarious financial situation. His mother worked as a seamstress, and his older siblings contributed to the income. After his school years Otto started working in a printing office. In the evenings he attended the commercial school "Alina" for two years. Memories of his leasure time in the ice skating rink and at dancing school. Position as an office clerk at an architect. Outbreak of World War One. Otto volonteered in 1915 and served in the artillery. He was stationed in Italy for almost three years and was decorated with the bronce medal of bravery. In 1917 his older brother Alfred was killed during battle. After the war Otto became a co-partner in his uncle's lumber business. Courtship and marriage in 1922. Honeymoon in Salzburg, Munich and Berlin. Business trips to France and Switzerland. Move to Salzburg, where Otto continued his lumber export business activities. "Anschluss" in 1938 and the terror of the Nazis. Detailed description of the liquidation of his assets. Due to business transfers prior to the Nazi-takeover he could save a good part of his fortune. Arrest and interrogation by the Nazi-officials. In 1938 he left Salzburg and tried to continue his business in Italy, France and Switzerland. Efforts to get family members out of Austria. In autumn 1938 he succeeded in getting his two children to join him in Bern. His wife Hilda was able to emigrate a few months later after a lot of difficulties. Due to their expiring visa they had to leave Switzerland for France.
