Abstract:
After 1655, Jews, mainly immigrants from Spain and Portugal, were allowed to settle in London and to practice their religion, but they were barred from the professions and from holding office. They were permitted to own, but not inherit, real estate through a process known as denization. Full property rights could be obtained through naturalization, but that required conversion to Christianity.
