Abstract:
Chronicles the activities of the Budapest rescue committee (Vaadat ha-Ezra ve-ha-Hatzalah), both before the German occupation of Hungary, giving aid to refugees from Czechoslovakia and Poland, and afterwards, especially the negotiations with the SS which led to the evacuation of 1,685 Jews to Bergen-Belsen and on to Switzerland, and the transfer of some 15,000 Jews, including families with children, to forced labor sites around Vienna, where, despite miserable conditions, most of them survived (some 600, however, were killed by the SS at the last moment).
