Discusses the question whether Jews who were assimilated or converted, and who did not identify with Judaism in their lifetime, should be considered worthy of study in the domain of Jewish history. Examines the cases of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Franz Boas, and Berthe Weill, who made significant contributions to culture - respectively, in music, anthropology, and art.
