Abstract:
Examines the role of the Eretz Israel Office in Budapest, and its head, Moshe Krausz, in rescue work in 1943. Notes that there were ca. 15,000 Jewish refugees in Hungary at the time, most of them from Slovakia. Krausz received funds from the Jewish Agency's Vaad ha-Hatzalah in Constantinople, but opinions differed on how these should be allocated to the various Zionist groups. The Vaad ha-Hatzalah then dictated the allocation of funds, as well as the provision of emigration certificates. Describes in detail the establishment of the Vaad ha-Hatzalah in Budapest in late 1943, and the arguments among the various factions involved. There was also conflict between this group and the Eretz Israel Office. Krausz made arrangements for many Jews to emigrate to Palestine, but he was sharply criticized, e.g. for not helping Slovakian Jews enough.
