Abstract:
A paper delivered at a conference held at Ariel University in September 2013. Internet social media, such as Twitter, represent changes in the understanding of the Holocaust in contemporary culture. References to the Holocaust are among those found often in Twitter messages, and some of the users refer to it in the literal sense and seriously. However, many others use the word "Holocaust" rhetorically, as a metaphor or euphemism, often referring to the Holocaust instrumentally, e.g. comparing it with Israeli treatment of Palestinians. Awareness of the Holocaust among youth is shallow and allows them to mock Auschwitz and other Holocaust images. Illustrates the problem with quotations from the Internet.
