Abstract:
Notes that the general view in Spain in the 1940s was that the Jews as a group were both religious and political enemies. From Franco's takeover of the regime in 1939, the contents of Spanish textbooks reflected this view, especially since the Catholic Church controlled the Education Ministry and was responsible for the curricula in the schools. The textbooks, which cultivated Catholic traditionalism and Spanish imperialism, and described Franco as a savior of Spain from internal and external enemies, branded the Jews as deicides and promulgated anti-Jewish stereotypes. Such textbooks continued to be used in the 1950s-60s, and were eventually changed only in the 1970s, when the order of the Sisters of Zion insisted that they be updated to reflect the Vatican's "Nostra aetate" declaration of 1965.
