Abstract:
Describes the municipal, economic, medical, welfare, and cultural functions of the committees, and their involvement in the communal efforts of the self-help organizations and of the Judenrat to cope with the hardships of everyday life in the ghetto. Information on the phenomenon of building committees (a carry-over from prewar times) comes mainly from the Ringelblum archives. These committees were active in various spheres. They organized communal kitchens and supplied food, especially to inhabitants who were moved from the surrounding villages to the ghetto; they supplied clothes, medications, and living quarters, and they worked with children and adolescents, organizing lessons and cultural activities.
