Abstract:
Points to the popularity of conspiracy theories over the centuries. Since the 19th century, these were applied to the Jews who were allegedly behind other conspiratorial groups - Freemasons, revolutionaries, Bolsheviks. A chapter from Hermann Goedsche's "Biarritz", describing a secret council of Jewish elders in the Jewish cemetery of Prague plotting Jewish domination of the world, was widely circulated in many languages; it was followed by a spate of similar publications and, finally, by the most influential of all, "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion". Although the latter was quickly exposed as a fabrication, it was adopted by the Nazis - the conspiracy theory was a basic element of their ideology and propaganda. Even after the defeat of Nazism, the theory (and the "Protocols") still offer, to those who need it, an explanation for every evil occurrence in the world.
