Abstract:
The pogroms of 1881 had a profound impact on the Russian-Jewish intelligentsia. The pogroms, which were believed to be supported by the government and which enjoyed support also among members of the Russian revolutionary movement, caused Russified Jewish intellectuals to revise their views, and aroused in them a new sense of Jewish identity. The Russian-Jewish weekly "Razsvet", published between 1879-83, provides an illustration of this process. An examination of the newspaper, especially the articles written by its editors and main writers, such as I.L. Rosenfeld, S. Lurie, M. Morgulis, M. Mysh, and J. Rombro through 1881, shows the evolution of the paper from a position of patriotic devotion to the late Tsar to a militant indictment of government policies toward the Jews and to a call for mass emigration.
