Abstract:
Criticizes the conception of Paul L. Rose, who in his book "Revolutionary Antisemitism in Germany: From Kant to Wagner" (1990) described Herder as one of the precursors of German radical, racial antisemitism. Cautioning against confusion between antisemitism and Christian anti-Judaism, contends that Herder admired early Jewish culture and esteemed the Jews as the discoverers of monotheism for all of humankind. Although Herder made some statements against contemporary Jews in his writings and letters, they have nothing in common with racism and radicalism. The viewpoints of two other authors, F.M. Barnard and Emil Adler, on the same issue are also mentioned.
