Abstract:
A lecture delivered at the 12th World Congress of Jewish Studies (1999). Compares ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) and modern Orthodox responses to the Holocaust, noting that ultra-Orthodox leaders have provided their followers with solutions to the religious crisis which followed the Holocaust. Since the ultra-Orthodox viewed emancipation and auto-emancipation as evils that could lead to disaster, they were able to accept the Holocaust more readily. They managed to derive a "consoling truth" from the disaster, which could be used to create a new energy for faith and hope. The prevailing view among religious Zionists and the modern Orthodox, that God "hid his face" during the Holocaust, was not as successful in restoring faith in Divine Providence and providing consolation. Discusses, also, Holocaust research, contending that while the first generation of researchers focused on maintaining Holocaust memory, the next generation needs to focus on the place of the Holocaust in Jewish history.
