Abstract:
Discusses two novels, by MacLennan (1959) and Klein (1951), which attempt to find answers to the problem of evil and suffering. MacLennan's protagonist is told by his mentor, who in turn learned this truth from a rabbi he met at Auschwitz, that life is a gift to be accepted even in the face of death. Klein sees in the Holocaust a part of God's plan; out of evil comes salvation - the birth of the State of Israel. Comments that these solutions appear too facile, and contrasts Klein with Elie Wiesel, who has questions but no answer.
