Abstract:
Discusses two medieval plays. In the earlier one, "Des Entkrist Vasnacht", the Jews, because of their blindness, are the first to fall victim to the deceit of the false Messiah; but the main concern is with the Christian rulers and clergy who also succumb to him. The second play, "Der Herzog von Burgund", was probably written by Hans Folz between 1486-93, when the citizens of Nürnberg were petitioning the reluctant emperor for permission to expel the Jews. In this play, the Jews follow the "Entkrist" because, according to a novel interpretation of his name, he promises to put an "end" to "Christians"; they try to persuade the Christians to accept him. Their plot is exposed; they are put on trial, subjected to ingenious and humiliating punishment, and driven ignominiously from the town.
