Abstract:
Ca. two million Jews from the Generalgouvernement and the Białystok district were killed by the Nazis during "Operation Reinhard", between March 1942-February 1943. The operation was organized by Odilo Globočnik, head of the SS and police in the Lublin district, under the orders of Himmler. Discusses Globočnik's activities, including the building of Treblinka, and his solution of technical problems there and at other camps in order to facilitate the murder of the Jews. Describes how he carried out the liquidation of ghettos, with the help of local police and trained Ukrainian and Baltic POWs, using as examples the ghettos of Tarnów and Częstochowa, as well as smaller ghettos in the north Lublin region. Forces used in the liquidations, e.g. German Police Battalion 101, were brutal and often murdered Jews on the spot. Although 10-20% of the men in Battalion 101 refused to murder Jews, ca. 80% did not object to carrying out orders and some even enjoyed killing the Jews.
