Abstract:
Argues that ghettos established by the Nazis in Poland in 1939-41 were not intended to serve as transit stations for the deportation of Jews. Rather, the goal was to isolate "the dangerous Ostjuden". The aborted plan to establish a ghetto in Amsterdam stemmed from the early, first impression of the Nazi rulers for whom Amsterdam Jewry seemed to resemble Eastern European Jewry in their character.
