Abstract:
States that the Spanish edict of expulsion in 1492 did not stipulate whether Jews had the right to sell their communal property, and as such was open to various interpretations. For the most part, communal property was confiscated by the Crown; however, some of it was sold or donated by the Jews, or confiscated by city councils or by nobles. After it became Crown property, petitions for ownership arrived from various bodies and the monarchs considered each case separately. In general, many synagogues became churches, monasteries, or chapels of a convent, as well as hospitals and "meeting houses."
