Abstract:
Analyzes drawings made in the concentration camps by French prisoners, both Jews and non-Jews. Reflects on the inner need of some people to create art, even under the very difficult conditions of the camps. Describes how the prisoners got the materials (paper, pencils, etc.), and deals with themes in the drawings, which mainly depicted human beings, work, the presence of death. Concludes that doing any kind of art work in the camps was a way of surviving. Pp. 107-126 present drawings by artists from Buchenwald, Ravensbrück, Dora, and Bergen-Belsen.
