Abstract:
Founded in 1936, the World Jewish Congress hoped to fight Nazi antisemitism by mobilizing Jews and non-Jews to form an international front against Hitler. The WJC knew about the persecution of Jews in Germany, Austria, Poland, Romania, Lithuania, and Latvia already in 1936; in 1937-38 reports were written about the situation in Germany, Romania, and France. A 1939 WJC report contains information about Nazi plans to concentrate all of the Jews of Europe in a "reservation" in Lublin, but, faced with conflicting Jewish and neutral interpretations, the organization remained perplexed. Gives an overview of resolutions adopted by the WJC and appeals to democratic countries and the League of Nations to come to the aid of the Jews. In 1939 the WJC helped Polish Jews who fled to neighboring countries, but the outbreak of the war put an end to rescue efforts.
