Abstract: Discusses reactions to the "St. Louis" in the USA sixty years and more after the event. The story of the ship carrying 937 mostly Jewish German refugees, which was refused entry to Cuba and the USA in 1939, is viewed in the USA as a symbol of the world's reaction to refugees and given ample space in American history books. In 1999 the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Musem dedicated an exhibition to the "St. Louis" and a commemorative event was held at the Capitol. Two American historians also undertook to trace the fate of all those on board the liner. The press presents the ship as a symbol of the world's indifference to the fate of the Jews and as the ultimate test after Evian of solidarity with them, which the free world failed. Argues that the USA loves symbols as a driving force for action and that the press uses "lessons of history" to justify current political choices. Symbols help the administration mobilize public opinion and are particularly effective if they also serve as a mea culpa, as in the case of the "St. Louis", for American inaction during the Holocaust.

Abstract: Founded in 1936, the World Jewish Congress hoped to fight Nazi antisemitism by mobilizing Jews and non-Jews to form an international front against Hitler. The WJC knew about the persecution of Jews in Germany, Austria, Poland, Romania, Lithuania, and Latvia already in 1936; in 1937-38 reports were written about the situation in Germany, Romania, and France. A 1939 WJC report contains information about Nazi plans to concentrate all of the Jews of Europe in a "reservation" in Lublin, but, faced with conflicting Jewish and neutral interpretations, the organization remained perplexed. Gives an overview of resolutions adopted by the WJC and appeals to democratic countries and the League of Nations to come to the aid of the Jews. In 1939 the WJC helped Polish Jews who fled to neighboring countries, but the outbreak of the war put an end to rescue efforts.
