Abstract:
Deals with policies of Polish authorities concerning Jews after the consolidation of communist power in 1949. In 1949-50 all independent Jewish institutions were liquidated and the Security Service began to infiltrate Jewish circles, especially those with a political orientation, like the Zionists. Describes operations code-named "Jordan" and "Zator", carried out in Kraków, Tarnów, and Nowy Sącz, which were relatively important Jewish centers. It was common for the communists to use extortion and threats to secure cooperation from the members of the Jewish communities. Discusses, also, the involvement of the Soviets in these operations, although evidence of direct involvement was not found in archival materials. States that the evidence is incomplete regarding the depth and breadth of persecution of Jewish communities in the 1950s, but it can be demonstrated that anti-Jewish activities continued, though in different ways, until the late 1970s.
