Abstract:
In the period of pogroms and anti-Jewish trials in Russia, Korolenko (1853-1921) defended the Jews. Korolenko was one of the few Russian writers who created positive Jewish images in his works. He publicly condemned the Kishinev pogrom of 1903. During the Beilis trial, he published fifteen articles in his defense in Kiev and St. Petersburg newspapers; he condemned the expulsions of Jews by the Russian army in the fall of 1914; he drew public attention to the "Mariampol treason" affair, when a Lithuanian Jew was arrested and tried for alleged treason in 1914. During the Civil War in Russia, Korolenko witnessed atrocities of the White Army against Jews. However, Korolenko was not a philosemite; he defended, with the same fervor, other minorities in Russia, and he noted and condemned the "Jews' dominance" in the Bolshevik Revolution.
