Abstract:
On contacts between King Yusuf Dhu-Nuwas (also known as Yusuf Asar Yathar), who was king of Himyar (Yemen) ca. 515-525, with Mar Zutra bar Mar Zutra (or Mar Zutra III) who emigrated from Babylonia to Tiberias in the year 520, and became head of the Yeshiva and of the Sanhedrin. King Yusuf had converted to Judaism, an act apparently carried out by Jewish emissaries from Tiberias to southern Arabia. It is said that the population of the Himyar kingdom may have converted to Judaism already in the late 4th century, and that the sages of Tiberias had had contacts with them all along as a Jewish enclave in Arabia. This Jewish kingdom came to an end with the defeat of Yusuf (and his committing suicide) in a battle with Christian forces from Abyssinia.
