Abstract:
Discusses the participation of Jews in the Slovak underground movement, in the partisan units, and in the uprising of August 1944. Names specific individuals, political groups, and operations, including activities of Hashomer Hatzair, Maccabi Hatzair, and Jewish communist groups which operated in the Sereď and Nováky labor camps and collaborated with non-Jewish groups. Mentions, also, collaboration between Jews of Czechoslovak origin and Czechoslovak anti-Nazi fighters in Turkey. Refutes allegations published by the First Czechoslovak Army (in exile) on 17 October 1944, in an order named "Jews - Participation in the Liberation War", which implied that the Jews were avoiding combat positions. States that the accusations were groundless, based on misinformation, and a result of misunderstanding of the precarious situation of Slovak Jews in 1944 when they again faced forced deportations, after most of those Jews capable of fighting had already been deported or interned.
