Abstract:
The legend of "Jewish wealth" and of the Jews as "rich", "unproductive", and "rapacious" aquired new traits and gained strength in the Weimar Republic. Economic developments after World War I, especially economic uncertainty and crisis, were ascribed to Jewish influence or power in Germany and worldwide. Particular persons were portrayed as the incarnation of the stereotypical "Jew", lending abstract and complex economic structures a shape, name, and face. Jewish efforts to combat the anti-Jewish stereotypes produced feeble results, since the Jews were forced into a defensive position, Jewish self-portrayal was up against prevalent antisemitic stereotypes, and the Jews themselves had internalized some of that prejudice. Concludes that the history of the economic status of the Jews must include, as well, the study of antisemitism and analyze fantasies about Jews, since these explain the view of "the Jew" as an economic subject and have contributed to their social reality.
