Abstract:
Notes that the reports of Globocnik, Buerckel, and the SD on the number of Jewish shops and apartments expropriated, the amount of violence and plundering, and the attitudes of the population to the "Kristallnacht" pogrom in Vienna are contradictory. Attempts to find more reliable evidence in reports of SA and SS units and other Nazi organs, as well as of eyewitnesses and victims. Describes destruction of synagogues; eviction of Jewish families from their homes, often accompanied by beatings, looting, and destruction; attacks on Jews in the streets; and widespread looting of Jewish shops - all carried out mostly by the SA; and the arrest of Jews without regard for age or sex by the SS. In the detention centers, Jews were brutally mistreated; this is where 20-30 murders took place. "Private" anti-Jewish excesses continued on a large scale until November 15, despite SS and police attempts to stop them. Mass arrests continued until November 16. Estimates that only a small proportion of the population participated actively in the pogrom; a small proportion opposed it or aided Jews; the great majority remained indifferent.
