Abstract:
Discusses the pogroms in Bucharest and Iaşi in 1941, including their backgrounds and how they were reported in the French press. The pogrom in Bucharest in January 1941, which took place in the context of the rebellion of the Iron Guard against General Antonescu and resulted in the death of 125 Jews, was only reported by "Le Temps" and "Paris-Soir". On the other hand, the large-scale pogrom in Iaşi in summer 1941, in the context of the onset of Operation Barbarossa and amidst accusations against the Jews for supposedly helping the Soviets, was widely reported in the French newspapers. The murder of thousands of Jews and the death of another 10,000 during evacuations from Iaşi after the pogrom were well known in France and amply documented by photographs.
