Abstract:
Describes the Jewish communities and their economic and cultural life in the counties of Poitou, Saintonge, and Aunis (western France) in the 12th-14th centuries. The Plantagenet rulers imposed a Jews' tax and the yellow badge (1269), extorting money through confiscations and threats of expulsion (1248). A massacre by Crusaders in 1236 resulted in 2,500 Jews killed. An attack by the Pastoureaux in 1320 was followed by the final expulsion of the Jews in 1322-23 by the French king.
