Abstract:
Digitized photos of the Inscription 1 of Ḥorvat 'Uza allow an entirely new reading of this literary document. It is the oldest pre-exilic Hebrew wisdom text, probably contemporaneous with king Josiah’s religious reform. The author’s advices rely on the reading of the Law: to use properly one’s tongue to glorify Yhwh while waiting for his judgment; to bring offerings for one’s own and kingdom’s well being; to rejoice oneself on Sabbaths by dancing and singing; to control one’s thoughts and desires for a just judgment; and finally, to live peacefully one’s life until its end in a tomb on earth, yet without any hope for life beyond this one.
