Abstract:
Discusses the French Catholic Church's apology for indifference and silence during the Holocaust, delivered on 30 September 1997 by Olivier de Berranger, bishop of Saint-Denis. Cites the "politics of memory" as a reason for the tardiness of the French Church's apology, in the context of the longstanding reluctance of France to assume responsibility for the antisemitism and collaboration of the Vichy regime. Also ties the delay to the attitude of the Vatican. After Vatican II, the attitude of the French Church also changed. Compares the French apology with the Vatican's statement "We Remember". Notes that the French went further, admitting the institutional responsibility of the Church (and not merely that of its members) and the contribution of Christian anti-Judaism to the creation of conditions that facilitated the Holocaust.
