Abstract:
On the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation (also called the Lloyd Street Synagogue), which was initially based on a group of Orthodox Jews who gathered in 1830 to pray in a small room above a grocery store. In 1845 the congregation moved to its grandiose building on Lloyd Street, and changed its name to the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation. In 1871, the congregation officially declared it a Reform synagogue. During the 19th and 20th centuries the building changed hands several times, and the congregation moved several times.
