Abstract:
Describes the efforts of Varian Fry, a New York writer, to assist refugees, mainly Jewish, in southern France. Fry, sent by the Emergency Rescue Committee of the American Friends of German Freedom to rescue intellectuals and political refugees, was hampered by the uncooperative attitudes of the American government, and especially the consulate in Marseille, which did all in its power to prevent Jews' emigration to the U.S. When, despite America’s entry into the war, the strict quotas were not relaxed, Fry publicly attacked Roosevelt’s government.
