Abstract:
Surveys the status of the Jews in Warsaw up to 1807. Despite the law against the permanent settlement of Jews ("de non tolerandis Iudaeis"), and restrictions such as the issuing of tickets to Jewish visitors from 1768 on, the Jewish population of Warsaw continued to grow. Summarizes the debate on Jewish settlement in Warsaw during the reformist Four Years Sejm (1788-1792). During the Kosciuszko insurrection (1794), in which Jews took part, relations with the townspeople improved. Nevertheless, the ticket fee was not abolished but actually raised. After the insurrection’s collapse that same year, the municipal authorities continued periodic expulsions until the Jews’ status was finally regulated in 1799. Discusses, also, the demographic and economic structure of the Warsaw Jewish community.
