Abstract:
Contends that the rescue of the Danish Jews in October 1943 was part of the development of the resistance movement against the Nazi occupation. There was a popular revolt in September 1943 - e.g. the Danish army was disbanded, the navy sank its boats, the police refused to cooperate with the German occupiers. The scattered resistance organizations came together to form a collective resistance movement led by the illegal Freedom Council. Although the Freedom Council did not make an independent effort for the Jews, the popular revolt engendered the rescue of the Jews. Kieler himself took part in the actions of that time.
