    Kurzfassung: Argues that the Danes who participated in the rescue of Jews in 1943 thought that they were risking their own lives. They were not aware of the fact that they were not at risk for deportation because of their actions in helping Jews. They did not know that the Germans would be willing to overlook the rescue actions in order to maintain their collaboration with the Danish authorities.

    Kurzfassung: The similarity in the number of Jews and the degree of assimilation in Denmark and Italy form the basis for this study. In both countries most of the Jews survived, aided by their fellow countrymen. But the Danish rescue operation was over in a few weeks and carried relatively limited risks, whereas the Italian escape routes were few and the Jews had to be kept hidden for longer periods of time. Moreover, the help that Italian Jews received was opposed to the policies of the regime. In contrast, both the reaction to the persecution of Jews and the rescue operation in Denmark was of a collective nature. Socio-psychological studies of altruism during the Holocaust have mainly focused on the background of individuals in an often hostile environment and may provide an explanation for the Italian situation, whereas the Danish collective action still lacks a plausible explanatory model.
