Abstract:
Discusses the Karaites - their religion and relations with Judaism and with the surrounding society. In all the countries where they lived, their image was one of loyal citizens as opposed to the image of "rabbanite" Jews. Surveys their fate during the Holocaust period in the occupied countries - e.g. Lithuania, Crimea, Ukraine, Vichy France. Describes German oscillation in regard to their status, ending in the Nazi decision that the Karaites did not belong to the Jewish faith and the group was saved from persecution. Underlines that Karaites throughout the ages adopted a certain "policy" of avoiding persecutions, always being closer to the majority, and even manifesting hostility to the Jews.
